What to watch for in 2023
What product and design people should be aware of for the coming year.
Apple AR Headset
Apple’s Augmented Reality (AR) headset is rumored to launch this year at somewhere between $1,600 - $2,500. Two big questions: How cool is the tech? What do consumers use it for?
AI Detector Aps
AI will be everywhere but so might apps that detect AI-generated content.
Plagiarism Checkers and AI Detectors Originality and Detect GTP already exist. You can imagine browsers or social platforms building native functionality to detect AI-generated content.
Ads Everywhere
You’ll see more and more ads, even in products you already pay for.
A typical product lifecycle goes Explore → Expand → Extract → Exit.
Many big tech companies have entered the Extract phase; they’ve reached board adoption and are now cashing in.

Design continues to take a back seat to Growth
90s style is back in fashion, and so is 90s web design. Pop-ups are everywhere least we leave clicks and sign-ups on the table.
Stormy seas for Big Tech?
Google search was dying even before Chat GPT and Microsoft is adding AI to Bing.
Meta faces trouble on several fronts. Apple’s privacy rules have hurt ad revenue, while TikTok is eating its user base.
Speaking of the Tok, the smart folks at The Generalist say that a U.S. ban looks increasingly likely.
Web-3 strikes back?
Maybe not in 2023, but everyone I know who works in Web3 is still invigorated and believes in the core use case. And as I’m writing this, Coin Base just laid off another 20% of their employees 😭.

Love the reminder about life cycle and paying attention to where a company may be when using their product --> A typical product lifecycle goes Explore → Expand → Extract → Exit.
